The project focuses on the Swedish stock of properties classified as second (holiday) homes. These are exempt from energy performance requirements for both new construction and major renovations. This applies regardless of the extent to which the second homes are used. Inventories and energy calculations for second homes that are used or can be used on a year-round basis are carried out with the aim of scaling up the results nationally to highlight the potential for resource and energy savings. Through calculations and measurements in these buildings in selected municipalities and based on previously developed building typologies, potential assessments are made for adapted and reflective technology development.
The project also investigates whether and how methods for visual AI technology can be used to identify characteristics in second homes that are significant for cultural values. Attitudes and motivations behind decisions to renovate or not renovate second homes are investigated through a qualitative interview study. Finally, this project, which attempts to take a holistic approach on these buildings, will focus on knowledge dissemination that contributes to sustainable, careful and resource-efficient management and renovation of second homes.
